Issues in Air Transportation (MGMT-941-0)
1.00 Credit

Description:

This course counts toward the following majors: Management & Strategy

Since scheduled air carriers provide the greatest proportion of "lift" in civil air transportation, airline issues are the primary focus of this course; yet all aspects of air transport, including freight carriers and general aviation, will be addressed. Airline-specific transportation issues that will be examined briefly, in context of the overall economy, include costing and pricing, marketing and selling, financing airlines and infrastructure, the pros and cons of network centricity, aircraft scheduling, technological change, aircraft and engines, and the influences of globalization. Issues of public-sector operations and policies related to air transportation service providers, such as air-traffic management, aeronautics R&D support, and the balance of trade implications, will also be discussed. This course combines traditional lecture and discussion sections, a set of "mini" case-studies prepared especially for this course, and guest speakers from industry who will address topics related to their own responsibilities. Two short papers on assigned topics will be required, as well as one longer paper on a subject of the student's choice (approved by the instructor). Also, there will be a final take-home exam.
